Girl Guides at the Canucks

This past weekend was a huge event for BC Girl Guides — more than 1000 members and their guests gathered at Rogers Arena for Girl Guides day at the Canucks. Highlights of the event included the awesome custom crest for all members in uniform, a members-only draw for awesome prizes, plus Girl Guides shout outs, members in the VIP High-Five zone, and an on-ice presence for the national anthems. To make the day even more exciting, the Canucks won the game against the Detroit Red Wings — Yay!

Burnaby Mountain district commissioner, Gerry, started organizing these events with the Canucks a few years ago as part of her role as BC Membership Advisor. Her term in that position has since ended but she has stayed on as special events coordinator for this exciting day. Way to go, Gerry!

Some Burnaby Mountain girl members also got to participate in the colours ceremony, carrying flags for the US and Canadian national anthems. This was a very special experience for the Spark and two Guides who were involved.

Other Burnaby Mountain members were present helping to run the event with jobs at the membership table and selling Girl Guide cookies. Lots of Burnaby Mountain girls and Guiders were also in attendance to enjoy the game. Girl Guides from around the province filled the arena — people came from as far as Prince George, Lillooet, Ucluelet, Nanaimo, and Castlegar. Many Girl Guides (including some of the Burnaby Mountain ones) got the thrill of being featured on the gigantic trinitron in the arena.

What an awesome day! We can hardly wait for next year. Keep your eyes peeled for a save-the-date coming soon for a Guiding “kick-off” event with the Vancouver Whitecaps this coming fall.

SOARing to Adventure

Last week a few girls plus two leaders from Burnaby Mountain District participated in a very exciting week-long provincial Girl Guide camp in Smithers, BC. SOAR — which stands for Spirit of Adventure Rendezvous — is a momentous occasion that happens every three year. Roughly 2500 girl and adult members gathered in Smithers to celebrate Guiding, camping, and fun.

This veritable army of Girl Guides came from all around the province. There were also visiting patrols from across Canada and even international patrols from places such as Japan, Peru, and Scotland.

SOAR is known for being an exciting camp full of incredible opportunities for activities and out trips. Program options at SOAR 2017 included horseback riding, paddle boarding, river rafting, forensics workshops, sculpting, a First Nations world heritage site, an amazing race, cycling, fly fishing, and more! Girls also got involved in local community service projects including putting together hygiene packages for a women’s transition house, renovating a horse arena, and constructing a horseshoe pit at a senior’s home.

Flying to Smithers and camping for a week was an exciting — and expensive — endeavor. These girls worked hard selling a huge number of Girl Guide Cookies to make this experience possible. Thank you so much to the hard working Burnaby Mountain volunteer leaders who made this possible for their patrol.

Provincial Book of Honour: Nancy McAskill

Girl Guides values the contributions of all of its members, but some women stand out as having gone above and beyond. Long time member Nancy McAskill was one such inspiration. Having held positions ranging from Unit Guider, to District Treasurer, Camping Advisor, and Commissioner, her vivacious personality and dedication to Guiding touched countless girls and women in our District.

Sadly, Nancy passed away at the end of 2012. Our District was set on recognizing Nancy’s involvement in our organization so an awards team formed to get a posthumous honour. It is with great enthusiasm as well as mournful remembrance that we got Nancy installed in the Girl Guides of British Columbia Book of Honour.

A member in the Book of Honour is one who demonstrated both a considerable commitment to fulfilling the organization’s Vision, Mission and Values and her acceptance of them as outlined in Guiding Essentials. The exemplification of and promotion of the spirit of Guiding through keeping the Promise and Law should have been evident in her Guiding endeavours. The Book of Honour is on display at Provincial Guide House and a different page is shown each day to recognize our Province’s most outstanding members.

A copy of the page from the book was presented to Nancy’s husband, Neil, at a ceremony at one of our District meetings in early 2014. Nancy’s devotion to Guiding and her contribution to our District will not be forgotten.
