District Science Day @ SFU

This March, Burnaby Mountain District partnered up with Simon Fraser University’s Let’s Talk Science to put on a fun-filled day of science at SFU campus.Feb 2014 017Volunteers from the various science disciplines lead girls through age-appropriate science activities. Younger girls learned about bacteria and fingerprinting, while older girls did things like extract DNA from fruit.

Feb 2014 008In the afternoon girls participated in a science challenge. Above are some Guides building parachutes to help eggs survive a 2-story drop. Meanwhile, below, Sparks worked on building tall structures using drinking straws.

Feb 2014 012It was fun to expose the girls to science at the university with enthusiastic volunteers. District Science Day was inspired by Girl Guides’ committment to engaging our girls with the STEM disciplines — Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The event was a huge success with a total of 95 girls and 21 Guiders from all twelve units coming out. A HUGE thank you to the people from Let’s Talk Science — we can’t wait to work with you again in the future!

Thinking Day 2014: Operation Earth Action

On February 22nd, Burnaby Mountain District gathered to celebrate Thinking Day, a special day celebrated by Girl Guides and Girl Scouts all around the world.

This year, our district decided to celebrate Thinking Day by completing the Girl Guides of Canada National Service Project Challenge, Operation Earth Action. Girls from nine different units presented challenges that they completed related to environmental sustainability.

Projects included making lip balm from household ingredients, doing crafts with recycled supplies, and doing litter pick ups. Feb 2014 086One unit presented a map-your-meal project to learn about how far away some of our food travels to meet us and to learn about the benefits of eating local. Feb 2014 091A Pathfinder group gave a presentation about tree planting in the community.

In addition, every girl at the event got to decorate a tote bag made out of a recycled T-shirt. Everyone at the event also participated in an oath to use reusable bags and water bottles when possible. All girls who participated got a crest celebrating their participation in the National Service Project.

Feb 2014 087The event also included a bake sale which is a fundraiser for our District camp at the end of the year. Thank you to everyone who donated baked goods, and to everyone who bought treats — we earned almost $250 for camp. About 80 girls came out to the Thinking Day event, and many parents and siblings stayed to join in the festivities. It was one of our most successful Thinking Days yet!

District Advancement & Family Picnic

To wrap up the Guiding year at a district level, Burnaby Mountain hosted a family picnic at Warner Loat Park to celebrate our girls and their families. The event was well-attended and it seemed like a good time was had by all.

The event started with an Advancement ceremony where each branch’s advancing girls were welcomed by the next branch as they symbolically crossed a foot bridge. The group got bigger and bigger as the group of advancing girls amassed, and eventually all of the girl members crossed together into the next Guiding year.

Big thank yous to the hard working Guiders who planned and put on such a great event. Thank you to the Pathfinder and Ranger girls who helped run the stations. And thank you also to West Coast Area Commissioner Donna came out as a special guest.
