At the most recent meeting for the 2nd Burnaby Mountain Sparks, the leaders warned the parents not to be alarmed when the picked up their girls and saw an ambulance in the parking lot — it wasn’t an emergency, it was just some awesome hands-on learning with a friendly neighborhood paramedic!

The girls had a great time learning about emergency response procedures in their community while chatting with a friendly paramedic who was very happy to show the girls the workings of his ambulance. They learned all about what is and is not an emergency and when it’s time to call 911. And should any of them ever experience an emergency involving an ambulance, maybe it will be just a little bit less scary now that they know what they look like up close.

They even got to take home a cool craft that allowed them to build their own 3D model of an ambulance. It was an awesome day!
This weekend the 22nd Guides went to see the Nutcracker performed by the Goh Ballet company at The Centre in Vancouver. Below are the girls posed with some of the very talented dancers!

This was an event that the girls were really looking forward to. They had been working up to it with other unit activities including their Nutcracker themed puppet show at enrollment and a visit from a community theatre actor to talk about drama and stage make up.

The unit was able to heavily subsidize the cost of this outing with money earned through the unit’s Girl Guide Cookie sales. Way to go, girls!
It was a great way to celebrate the holiday season with friends.
For several years in a row, Burnaby Mountain District has been hosting a family bowling day as a fundraiser towards district events. This year’s event was to raise funds for the district camp coming in June of this Guiding year. We even had an ideas board posted for girls to suggest themes for the camp. It’s going to come down to a vote in the new year.

The district rented out the entire Old Orchard Bowling alley and had girls and their families sign up for time slots to play a game of bowling. We also had Dominos pizza and a light concession available, which also contributed to the funds. The party lights and music played, making the event even more fun.

Over all the event made us a couple hundred dollars, plus one Pathfinder! One girl brought a friend who had such a good time she registered for our Pathfinder unit just a couple of days later. This year was also special because the event fell on the birthday of one of our Brownie leaders — we had the whole bowling alley sing her happy birthday while she blew the candles out on a slice of cake.
The event is a favorite for the district because while it is, technically, a fundraiser it is more importantly a whole lot of fun!!
Late fall is always a busy time for enrollments as Girl Guides around the country learn to tie their ties, make friends with their new groups, and make their Guiding promise. Enrollments take many themes, often cooked up by our very creative girls. In this post we feature two groups who had fun making enrollment their own.

Firstly, the 2nd Burnaby Mountain Sparks had a lovely rainbow themed enrollment where girls crossed through a rainbow arch before making their promise.

The leaders got an awesome butterfly cupcake-cake to celebrate the occasion as well! They finished the event with a family sing-a-long, practicing the tunes that the girls would be singing for local seniors in a couple of weeks.
And secondly, the 22nd Burnaby Mountain Guides had their enrollment with girls making their promises and then entertaining their parents with an elaborate Nutcracker puppet show that the girls had been working on for weeks ahead of time.

They made the puppets themselves and enjoyed studying the story as it is preparing them for an outing to see the Nutcracker performed by the Goh Ballet coming up in December.
Welcome to all of the new girls who joined Guiding in Burnaby Mountain this year! It’s still not too late if your daughter is interested in joining the fun. We accept new members all year round. More girls are still joining every week and there is still room in most of our units.
In October the girls from the 22nd Burnaby Mountain Guides had a sleepover at Guiding’s own Richmond Guide House property. When asked what activity the girls wanted to pair with this sleepover they enthusiastically chose Extreme Air Park.

Extreme Air Park Richmond is Canada’s largest trampoline park, featuring a massive 42,000 sq/ft of enclosed interlocking trampolines and a variety of activities. The girls had a blast playing on the equipment.
Some of the highlights of air park were the bounce balls, foam pit, and black lights.
After some exhausting time bouncing around the air park the girls went back to Richmond Guide house for dinner and to watch a movie together. The weekend also served as a great camp skills opportunity as girls got to use tents to sleep in Guide House’s huge back yard!

A fall sleepover is a great way for girls to get to know each other and to get the Guiding year off to a great start. Another Burnaby Mountain unit recently had a fall sleepover at Eileen Daily Pool — swimming is another excellent active activity to pair with sleepover fun!
This year Burnaby Mountain District partnered with our neighbours in Burnaby North District to represent Girl Guides of Canada at the Remembrance Day parade and ceremony at the North Burnaby Cenotaph.

About 20 girls and 8 leader from our district participated in the event, with an even larger number of girls from Burnaby North — they have been doing this event which occurs in their home district for years.

First everyone gathered at a rallying point then they marched the parade route and finally participated in a wreath laying ceremony.

Everyone was very glad that the rain held off that day. It was a lovely event to honour our veterans and to be thankful for the peace that we have as a result of their sacrifices. Thank you very much to the girls and Guiders who participated in the event.
Girl Guides loves celebrating special days! Many units, including our 54th Burnaby Brownies, celebrated Halloween at the end of October.
In Brownies, Special Days is even a badge that the girls can work on in their programming. This unit incorporated those activities into their Halloween party. Girls came to the meeting wearing their costumes. Pikachus, mermaids, unicorns, Hermione Grangers and more all had a great time.
One of the activities involved girls in teams turning one of their friends into a toilet paper mummy. It was a close competition, but the mummy below was the winning creation!

At Girl Guides the leaders love to get in on the fun too. This, clearly, is a fun leadership team to be a part of!
The units Guiders came dressed as Super Guider and She-Ra, Princess of Power. Thanks for being so festive, ladies!
Special days can be a lot of fun and they can also be an important part of how we connect as a community. Stay tuned for some photos of our girls at a local Remembrance Day ceremony this past weekend.
A couple of weeks ago girls from our 12th Rangers unit went for a relaxing weekend at beautiful Camp Olave. The main goals were to relax and to get to know each other better, and these goals were met with great success!
